Class AAAA Girls
I'll be doing the recap a little different this year. Since video is available for each race, there's really no need for me to type out a description of how it happened. You can watch the video if you want to see how the race played out.
Additionally, for Class AAAA, I'll only be making note of All-Time State Meet Performances and not Class AAAA All-Time State Meet Performances. As this was the first year of Class AAAA, this year's Top 10 is the Top 10 All-Time, and every winner is a new State Meet Record.
100 Meter Dash
Jefferson's Elecia McCurrie held off a strong challenge from Oak Hill's Amya Seay-Grasty to take
the title 12.35 to 12.45. Only Musselman's Jada Gunn joined those two under 13 seconds.
RunWV's Current Score: 8 of 8.
200 Meter Dash
Jefferson's Elecia McCurrie laid down a 24.91 clocking to win convincingly. This also gives her the
9th Best All-Time State Meet Performance. As a side note, she also has #6 and #7. Oak Hill's
Amya Seay-Grasty was again 2nd in 25.40 with Wheeling Park's Rianna Farrow, Jefferson's Imani
Wood, and Riverside's Jada Ward also going under 26 seconds.
RunWV's Current Score 15 of 16.
400 Meter Dash
Jefferson's Elecia McCurrie took this one as well, scoring the win in 58.49. She held off a late charge
from the strong-finishing Victoria Ribas of University, who was 2nd in 58.90. Wheeling Park's Rianna
Farrow scored 3rd place from the 1st heat in 59.01. Jefferson's Imani Wood, Jefferson's Elizabeth
Riordan, and University's Shae Hopkins were also under 60 seconds with Riordan also coming from the
1st heat.
RunWV's Current Score: 21 of 24.
800 Meter Run
This race was a stark contrast to the AAA race, where most of the placers ran a negative split. In this one,
Jefferson's Elizabeth Riordan went out aggressively, going through the 1st lap in 1:04.78, and no one
was ever able to reel her in as she stretched the lead over the 2nd half of the race to take the win in 2:14.88.
University's Cara Zundell ran in 2nd for most of the race, taking that spot in 2:16.61. Cabell Midland's
Adalyn Cantrell used a more balanced approach and moved up through the field in the 2nd lap to take 3rd
in 2:17.46. Morgantown's Allison Hawkins was 4th in 2:18.28 with Hurricane's Ella Sturm 5th in
2:19.12, Morgantown's Jenna Conaway 6th in 2:19.61, and Huntington's Laurel Johnson 7th in 2:19.77
also getting in under 2:20 in 7th. Only 1 of the 8 placers graduates, so this should be a great race next year
as well. Lap 1 - Riordan, Zundell, Johnson, Carpenter, Sturm, McCrady, Hawkins, Yates. Finish - Riordan,
Zundell, Cantrell, Hawkins, Sturm, Conaway, Johnson, Yates. One of my predicted placers scratched the event
due to injury.
RunWV's Current Score: 27 of 32.
1600 Meter Run
Musselman's Sadie Yates and Morgantown's Allison Hawkins had the expected duel in this one, and
Yates led throughout the first 3 laps with Hawkins right on her tail at all times. After 3 laps, they were
separated by just 0.15 seconds. Somewhere in the final lap, Hawkins made the pass and had opened a small gap
with about 150 to go, but Yates responded and pulled even coming out of the turn and made the pass with about
90 meters to go. She'd pull away to win by just over a second in 5:01.16 to Hawkins' 5:02.39. Cabell
Midland's Adalyn Cantrell, Hurricane's Sofie Zappitelli, and Morgantown's Leyland Phillips
were under 5:13 as well. Lap 1 - Yates, A.Hawkins, Tidd, Busch, Cantrell, Zappitelli, Phillips, L.Hawkins.
Lap 2 - Yates, A.Hawkins, Tidd, Cantrell, L.Hawkins, Phillips, Busch, Zappitelli. Lap 3 - Yates, A.Hawkins,
Cantrell, Phillips, L.Hawkins, Zappitelli, Simmons, Coakley. Finish - Yates, A.Hawkins, Cantrell, Zappitelli,
Phillips, L.Hawkins, Metz, Simmons. One of my predicted placers, Hurricane's Francy Tidd, was very
solidly in 3rd at about 1100 Meters, but rolled her ankle and had to exit the race.
RunWV's Current Score: 33 of 40.
3200 Meter Run
The expected showdown between Musselman's Sadie Yates and Morgantown's Allison Hawkins did not
occur as Yates started pulling away from her fairly early and added to the gap throughout. But Parkersburg's
Morgan Metz tried to throw a wrench into things with an aggressive start. Metz took out very hard,
going through lap 1 in under 73 seconds and leading by over 4 seconds. She led by over 5 seconds through 2
laps and did not relinquish the lead until mid-way through lap 4. Yates would go on to pull away from the
field to win by nearly 16 seconds in 10:37.41. This gives her the 10th Best All-Time State Meet Performance.
Hawkins would get by Metz and put a gap on before Metz tried to make one final run on the final lap, but
Hawkins held the spot in 10:53.35. Metz also came in under 11:00 with a 10:57.22. The top 8 were all under
11:30. Lap 1 - Metz, Yates, Pritt, Hawkins, Bailey, Coakley, Phillips, Zappitelli. Lap 2 - Metz, Yates,
Hawkins, Pritt, Phillips, Coakley, Bailey, Zappitelli. Lap 3 - Metz, Yates, Hawkins, Phillips, Pritt,
Coakley, Biundo, Bailey. Lap 4 - Yates, Metz, Hawkins, Phillips, Pritt, Coakley, Zappitelli, Bailey. Lap
5 - Yates, Hawkins, Metz, Pritt, Coakley, Phillips, Bailey, Zappitelli. Lap 6 - Yates, Hawkins, Metz, Coakley,
Zappitelli, Pritt, Phillips, Simmons. Lap 7 - Yates, Hawkins, Metz, Coakley, Zappitelli, Phillips, Simmons,
Pritt. Finish - Yates, Hawkins, Metz, Zappitelli, Phillips, Coakley, Simmons, Pritt.
RunWV's Current Score: 39 of 48.
100 Meter High Hurdles
Huntington's Milleah Johnson added to her tropy case with a strong win in 14.85. That was 0.8 seconds
ahead of 2nd place finisher Molly Brinker of Wheeling Park.
RunWV's Current Score: 46 of 56.
300 Meter Low Hurdles
Wheeling Park's Molly Brinker took the lead between the final two hurdles and cleared the final hurdle
cleanly to take the close win over Huntington's Aleigha Myers 45.02 to 45.13. Everyone else was at
least 1.6 seconds behind with only Wheeling Park's K'Lyn Neider and Huntington's Audra Gerlach
going under 48 seconds among the rest of the field (they were both under 47).
RunWV's Current Score: 54 of 64.
4x100 Meter Relay
Washington got out quickly and led throughout in giving the team of Jurnee Vrobel, Ayla Kidd, Shakinah Young,
and Cristina Durand the win in 49.39. Only Wheeling Park was able to join them under 50 seconds with a
49.77. Huntington scored an important 3rd place out of the 1st heat.
RunWV's Current Score: 62 of 72.
4x200 Meter Relay
Spring Mills led much of the race, but it was about dead even coming out of the final turn, and Spring Mills
was able to pull away to give the crew of Ariyanna Bolden, Keeley Johnson, Saniah Garrison, and Nia Fobbs
the win in 1:44.92. Hutnington held 2nd in 1:45.64. Woodrow Wilson slipped by Wheeling Park for 3rd, 1:45.97
to 1:46.01.
RunWV's Current Score: 70 of 80.
4x400 Meter Relay
Jefferson scored the come-from-behind win in exciting fashion. Jefferson got out to the early lead on a 59.3
opening leg from Imani Wood. University moved to the front on the 2nd leg with Jefferson in 2nd. I think
it was Musselman just sliding up to 3rd at the exchange. Jefferson pulled even halfway through the leg, but University
pulled back away in the 2nd half. Adding to the deficit, Jefferson botched the handoff with McCurrie actually
doing a 360 spin before corralling the baton and taking off on her leg. But she would not be denied, and Elecia
McCurrie made the pass with about 30 meters to go and split 55.95 on my watch to snag the win in 4:02.75 to
give that group of Imani Wood, Avery Root, Elizabeth Riordan, and Elecia McCurrie the 7th Best All-Time
State Meet Performance. The University unit of Victoria Ribas, Sophie Noe, Cara Zundell, and Shae Hopkins
was 2nd in 4:03.24 which gives them the 10th Best All-Time Staet Meet Performance. Woodrow Wilson, Morgantown,
and Huntington were also under 4:10.
RunWV's Current Score: 76 of 88.
4x800 Meter Relay
In a great battle of the top 2 State Meet times ever, Hurricane was able to outduel Morgantown for the win. I was really
counting on the official splits to help me out here, but they didn't record them for this race. Morgantown led through
the first leg with a 2:21. I think it was Buckhannon-Upshur in 2nd. After 2 legs, it was Morgantown, Cabell Midland
moving up into a very close 2nd on a strong leg from Adalyn Cantrell, Hurricane, and Parkersburg. Hurricane
took the lead on the 3rd leg with a strong run from Sofie Zappitelli. Morgantown was in 2nd with Cabell Midland
in 3rd and Parkersburg in 4th. Morgantown made the pass into the lead just before the bell lap. They pushed that lead
out to 7 meters or so with 200 to go, but Hurricane wasn't done, and Francy Tidd made the pass back into the
lead with about 40 meters to go and the foursome of Ella Sturm, Ella Dye, Sofie Zappitelli, and Francy Tidd
took the win in 9:26.45. That is the Best All-Time State Meet Performance. Morgantown's group of Lauren
Hawkins, Tumaini Yawe, Jenna Conaway, and Allison Hawkins was 2nd in 9:27.83, which is the 2nd Best All-Time
State Meet Performance. Cabell Midland held solidly in 3rd in 9:41.27, and Musselman came up to 4th in 9:48.97.
RunWV's Current Score: 82 of 96.
Shuttle Hurdle Relay
Huntington really got away with one here. I didn't notice it at the time, but leg 3 left way early, but no call, no
foul. Musselman was fighting them hard before stumbling late in leg 3. Huntington had Milleah Johnson on the
end no one was going to do anything with her, and Huntington's squad of Leilani Bounds, Elizabeth Bohren, Audra
Gerlach, and Milleah Johnson took the win in 1:03.85, which also gives them the 9th Best All-Time State Meet
Performance. Parkersburg took the 2nd spot in 1:05.87 with Musselman 3rd in 1:06.70.
RunWV's Current Score: 89 of 104.
High Jump
Riverside's Jada Ward added another title to her shelf as she jumped cleanly through 5'6. Only Parkersburg's
Maya Baruwa was able to go higher than 5'0 among the rest of the field with her 5'4 clearance.
RunWV's Current Score: 96 of 112.
Pole Vault
Morgantown's Harlyn Nelson and Spring Mills' McKenna Mullin each cleared 11'0, but Nelson managed it on
her 1st attempt while Mullin got it on her 2nd to give Nelson the win. No one else cleared higher than 9'0.
RunWV's Current Score: 102 of 120.
Long Jump
Wheeling Park's Molly Brinker went 16'10.25 on her 2nd attempt and matched it on her 4th to take the win.
Srping Mill's McKenna Mullin was 2nd with a 16'6.50. Riverside's Ava Ward and Buckhannon-Upshur's
Rylen Carlyle were also over 16'0.
RunWV's Current Score: 107 of 128.
Shot Put
Hurricane's Jenna Geter moved into the lead on her 1st attempt in the finals and then better that by over a
foot on her 5th attempt to take the win with a 38'1. That gave her the twin by over 2 1/2 feet. Less than 4 inches
separated 2nd through 4th with Musselman's Brionna Banjoman, Spring Mills' McKenna Mullin, and
Woodrow Wilson's Caden Reid taking those spots.
RunWV's Current Score: 113 of 136.
Discus
Riverside's Cianna Groom had all 6 of her throws marked, and each was enough to win the event. Her top
throw came on her 3rd attempt, and she sailed it 142'0 to win by over 11 feet. It also gives her the 2nd
Best All-Time State Meet Performance. She also has the #3 All-Time from last year. Hurricane's Jenna
Geter was already in 2nd but put her final throw out to 130'8. Martinsburg's Miyah Williams and
Musselman's Brionna Banjoman were also over 115'0.
RunWV's Current Score: 121 of 144.
The final score of 121 of 144 means that 84.0% of the people picked to place did indeed place. That's one better than last year's AAA group despite a fairly feeble field event showing. I managed to get all 8 placers in the 100, 300 LH, 4x100, 4x200, and Discus. Congratulations to those that proved me wrong.
Exceeding Predictions
